I love to work savory ingredients into my cocktails…and there is definitely a trend out their among professional cocktail artisans who are using seasonal savory notes to take your palette on a new found journey.
Here is one I adapted from the Bellagio in Las Vegas:
Apple Sage Martini
Makes 1 cocktail
- 3 sage leaves
- 2 lime wedges
- 2 oz vodka
- 1 oz apple schnapps/apple cider
- 1 tbs lemon juice
- 1 tbs simple syrup
- Ice
Muddle the lime wedges and 2 sage leaves in a shaker/pint glass. Add vodka, schnapps/cider, lemon juice and simple syrup. Add ice and shake, shake, shake. Strain into cocktail glass. Float extra sage leaf on as garnish. Enjoy!
A great way to infuse savory into cocktails is thru the addition of savory simple syrups. One of my favorite herbs is fresh thyme – I am lucky enough to have a small container herb garden and my thyme is going crazy right now – perfect thyme to make a martini!
Apple and Thyme Martini
Makes 4 cocktails
- Ice
- 10 oz vodka
- 6 oz apple juice/apple cider
- ¼ cup thyme syrup (see below)
- Apple slices (squeeze some lemon over to keep from browning)
- 4 fresh thyme sprigs
Fill shaker with ice. Combine vodka, apple juice, and thyme syrup and shake, shake, shake. Divide among 4 glasses. Garnish with apple slices and thyme sprigs – now enjoy!
Thyme Simple Syrup:
- 1 cup sugar
- ½ cup water
- 5 large sprigs thyme
In a saucepan, combine all over medium heat. Bring to boil and reduce heat to simmer until sugar dissolved, about 5 minutes. Take pan off heat, cool syrup. Extra syrup may be stored in airtight container in the refrigerator.
